Celebrating 10 years of artists, exhibits, and a brand new space the bay area gallery, White Walls. March 9th (7 – 11 pm) will be the opening celebration of a very diverse and interesting group show. For all those in S.F. and the surrounding…this is going to be a great evening.

White Walls is pleased to present the 10 Year Anniversary Show, an exhibition of artists that have provided the backbone of our success and artists we look forward to growing with. Selections from Curator Justin Giarla’s personal collection will be on display alongside new works. Join us for the opening reception Saturday, March 9, from 7-11pm. The exhibit will be open to the public for viewing through April 6, 2013.

Directly following the grand opening of our new building at 886 Geary, the 10 Year Anniversary Show will be an expansive group exhibition, filling both White Walls and Shooting Gallery with influential artists that have changed the face of urban contemporary art, a scene that White Walls was created to give a home to a full decade ago. What was once an underdeveloped and oft-ignored part of the art world has grown into an incredibly diversified cornerstone of the contemporary market. The 10 Year Anniversary Show will reflect the breadth of talent that made such a change possible with range of work that will include everything from Russel Young’s ‘diamond dust’ screen prints on linen to Gronquist’s sculptural take on taxidermy.

Artists featured will be Shepard Fairey, Mark Whalen, Herakut, Augustine Kofie, Jet Martinez, DAL East, Faith 47, Fahamu Pecou, Robert Williams, Niels Shoe Meulman, Greg Gossel, ROA, Apex, Ferris Plock, C215, Casey Gray, David Grant, Peter Gronquist, Miss Bugs, Shawn Barber, Russell Young, Logan Hicks, Helen Bayly, Lauren Napolitano, Rene Gagnon, Gregory Euclide, Robert Christian Malmberg and Sean Murdock.

Rabbi Darkside –‘Prospect Avenue’ Campaign

Brooklyn’s own Rabbi Darkside recently jumped off a kickstarter for his a new project ‘Prospect Avenue’. It’s not everyday here at DLC we push a kickstarter project, but Rabbi D and all the good people involved on this record work everyday to make the world better through hip hop, art, and music. We believe they give to the community endlessly, and its about time for them to receive that energy. Only so they can turn around and once again deliver that goodness back to the people.

The project has great music, vinyl options, and a book illustrated by Rabbi D’s grandmother.  It’s an amazing cast of collaborators who have come together to make a really fresh package. Watch the video created by our homies at A Love Supreme Productions.  Support the arts!

The 7′s: Stick-Up

Aaaannndddd……The 7′s is back!  We’ve recently been hard at work setting up things like our monthly Beat Tape party and getting ready for record releases by Turnbull Green, Dfalt, and Bisco Smith, so we’re excited to bring back our 7″ beat making series. This time around the track is Honey Cone’s 1971 classic, “Stick-Up”.

For those new to The 7′s:

The 7′s is an ongoing sampling/beatmaking project we’re extending to the Daylight Curfew community.  We pick the 7″, we record a small snippet sample and we offer it up to see what you can do with it.  To all producers out there, we’re looking forward to seeing how you get involved with this one.

DLC sits directly above an amazing used record store in downtown LA and every now and then we’ll be taking a trip downstairs to do a bit of shopping.  The 7″s will be picked on label design and song title alone.  There are no turntables to preview the records so the better the record is represented visually, the better the chance we’ll buy and feature it on the site.

Your job is to download the selected sample and flip the fuck out of it to the best of your ability. Chop it, screw it, glitch it, rap or sing over it.  The sky is the limit on this one.  We’ll be choosing our picks and doing features on the top producers. Deadline is Friday, March 22nd.

Our top producer pick will receive a Daylight Curfew t-shirt of their choice.

Core_1

What are you currently working on?
Just wrapped up an album with my homie Zajazza outta Lyon France called “Uncle Haywood and Lucien” and am working on an audio/visual short film called “The Box”. Trying to step into combining film and music and continue the exploration of a Hip Hop aesthetic in Film

Tell us about your process from inspiration to execution?
Usually its a sound or a phrase. Like I will play a drum pattern in my head and just beat it out or a texture in a sample or loop that gets me excited and then I try to be as free as possible.  I aim to not constrict myself too much and go as much stream of consciousness as I can, let it happen organically. Once I feel I have the base of everything, like Im feeling the beat, then I get super technical in terms of audio and polish, really get into how this needs to sound and feel.

Core_2

What have you been listening to lately?
I always keep a mix of old and new. New wise I been bumpin Laura Mvula’s album, such a surprise of sound and composition. Roc Marciano got my ears heavy, love the textures of his production. Still bumpin that Killer Mike album with El-P, got into it kinda late. As far as “old” playing a lotta Eugene McDaniels and Rodriguez. Lotta rare soul and psych music.

What do you want people to take away from your work when they hear it?
I want them to be affected. I like to create a total experience. I aim to effect the whole body and mind, its why much of my music and performance is always so large. So when people leave they have reached emotionally and physically. I don’t aim for intellectual stuff anymore, if they get there cool with me ya know. But if they are not feeling than I feel like I have done them disservice.

Core_3

What does the future hold for you?
Art, art and more art. Right now I have just been experimenting a lot. I have a lot old music I plan on releasing on some “Lost Tapes” type vibe. Want to clean on the cages. A lot more collaborative. Stepping away from the album game as I want to invest more into the big multi-angled project side of things. I have gotten a little bored with albums. I think its time to move into making new “packages” for lack of a better word. New units and forms.

Where can we find you?
Soundcloud – Is where I am at mostly these days while Im building my new website. And my sounds you can find on Bandcamp or iTunes

Core will be at Beat Tape this weekend: http://www.daylightcurfew.com/beattape/

New York / Paris producer Chaze just dropped a fresh new video, directed by Jay One and titled “This Was Your Town” featuring Casey Mecija. Set in Paris, infamously known as the City of Light, exposes viewers to a raw and more urban side of Parisian streets. To better illustrate his vision, Chaze enlisted the vocal talents of Casey Mecija and artist Jay One, pioneer of French Graffiti.

DJ Synapse – Mind Games Mix (Black Scale)

DJ Synapse and Black Scale just dropped a mix titled Mind Games. Synapse always comes correct with the skills and the selections. Check out the mix and definitely keep an ear on Synapse.

Mind Games. Everyone plays them, mostly with themselves. Black Scale brings out their long-time fam DJ Synapse, for their April mix to bring you Mind Games. These are the Mind Games of DJ Synapse, a New York stalwart, and brand developer of 15 years. The songs in this mix were blended live with two Technics, a Rane mixer and Pioneer EFX-500 box. The songs were completely new to Synapse when he mixed them, so it’s an improvisational affair. After blending the songs (22 in 30 minutes), Synapse laid his cut, paste and scratch flavor, to the mix, something he has always been known for. These Mind Games are an attempt at a new way of looking at mixing.

LISTEN: Killer Mike and El-P are Run The Jewels

Last year’s El-P-produced Killer Mike record, R.A.P. Music, saw it’s fair share of critical praise, leaving fans hungry for more.  The melding of El-P’s hard hitting beats from Brooklyn found a perfect match with Killer Mike’s politically charged Southern flow.  There was one problem, El-P only appears once,  the album’s ninth: “Butane (Champion’s Anthem)”.  Well don’t get too down because the duo just posted a snippet from their newest project, Run The Jewels. A project where they’ll share time on the mic while El-P continues to handle the album’s production.  The track, “Banana Clipper”, appears on El-P’s Soundcloud and announces this Summer for the album’s release.  Dive in and get a taste of what’s headed your way from this dynamic duo.

We recently met the prolific producer, DJ, and newly established music video director, Computer Jay, at our monthly Sunday afternoon party, Beat Tape. He passed us along Volume 1 of his 4 part album, Savage Planet Discotheque, a highly recommended collection of warm, crunchy beats, sci-fi inspired textures and samples, along with a few vocal melodies straight from the soul of the 70s.  We inquired a bit more about what he’s up to and what is to come.

UPDATE: We forgot to mention the ill video game that Jay wrote, it accompanies the record and will open up new tracks. http://spdgame.com/

What are you currently working on?
I gearing up to release Vol.2 of my 4 part album Savage Planet Discotheque. We just released a video for the single “Hardships”.  I’m really excited about it cause it’s my first attempt at directing a music video.

Tell us about your process from inspiration to execution?
It honestly varies. Sometimes it comes from digging through old records, sometimes it comes from experimenting with synths, or playing around with chords on the Rhodes. It also can come from what I’m currently going through with everyday life.. Good day, bad day, Etc..

What have you been listening to lately?
Some of Adrian Younge’s works, Metronomy, DJ Screw Tapes, Tnght, Giovanni Marks “African American Psycho”, Ommas Keith’s “City Pulse”, and Hanni El Katib to name a few.

If your music could be a soundtrack for anything, what would it be and why?
It would be a soundtrack to a Sci-Fi flick starring Prince, Salvador Dali, and James Earl Jones.. But like James Earl Jones when he starred in Conan the Barbarian and was low key Funkin.. Why? Cause that shit would be TIGHT.

What do you want people to take away from your work when they hear it?
Inspiration. New Ideas. Something Different every time.

What does the future hold for you?
More Volumes of Savage Planet Discotheque, an EP with “Orfeo” (Amazing Singer), and several variations of my live show.

Where can we find you?
ComputerJay.Net… But “ComputerJay” at anything really. Twitter, FaceSpace, SoundCloud, Instagram, etc… Apparently I’m the only “Computer Jay” in the world.

Are there audio or visual projects you’ve been into lately, outside your own, that you’d like the DLC community to check out?
Daedelus Darlington and Time Boy’s live show,  Mr. Oizo‘s “Wrong”, Game of Thrones, and the Xploded Drawing Crew out in Austin Texas.
8.
